It was past 11:00 at night and Doris was post-entering suitcases in the El Al Airlines customs department. All the other customs agents had gone home for the night and Doris was left to review the dozen remaining suitcases by herself. The process to post-enter suitcases was long and tedious work; Doris had been at it for several hours and was flustered.
She’d just finished reviewing one of the suitcases when a man she had never seen stuck his head into room.
“Do you need any help?” He said. “You look upset.”
“No.” Doris replied, thinking he was looking for a date. “I’m not upset, I’m totally fine.”
“Are you sure?”
“There is nothing at all that you can do to help me with, sir.”
“Sheesh alright lady.” The man replied. “I was just trying to help you.”
“Well I don’t need any help.”
The man turned around and walked away, murmuring, “What a nasty lady!” Under his breath.
A few days later one of Doris’ friends asked her if she wanted to go on blind date with her and her boyfriend.
“A blind date?” Doris said.
“Yes. I promise you he’s a nice man and he owns a beautiful black Oldsmobile so he must have some money.”
“What does he look like?”
“He's a nice looking man. He's just for you Doris, just for you.”
“Well alright.” Doris said. “When is it?”
“This weekend.” Her friend said, “Saturday night.”
“Alright I’m not busy this weekend. Let's go.”
Doris’ friend also worked at El Al Airline and suggested they go to a restaurant near JFK called Johnny's. Doris had been there before, it was a place where airport people went for lunch and supper. Doris and her friend and her friend’s boyfriend were seated at a table in the back of the restaurant, directly in line with the door allowing Doris to see patrons as soon as they entered the restaurant.
They had been seated for a few moments when Doris saw the man, who had been bothering her earlier in the week while she was post-entering suitcases, walk into the restaurant. Oh no, Doris thought to herself, that’s the man who tried to pick me up the other night. As soon as the man saw Doris he also froze up and then walked over shaking his head. He was also clearly none-too-pleased to discover who his mystery date was.
The man sat down and introduced himself. His name was Arthur and he worked for the Port Authority at JFK. Their initial conversations were awkward but soon the whole group was exchanging anecdotes and laughing about the challenges of working in customs department at JFK. They all had a lot in common. Over a few pizzas and beers they laughed the whole night through…
At the end of the night Arthur offered to drive Doris back to her home in Forest Hills. As Doris sat in the beautiful black Oldsmobile she had heard so much about she thought to herself, gee wiz – I sure missed out on a nice fellow. At least he’s taking me home…
In front of her house Arthur very unpresumptously stuck out his hand to shake Doris’s hand and she leaned over and kissed him on the cheek.
“Perhaps we can meet again soon?” Arthur said.
“That would be very nice.”
Two years later they were married in front of most of the El Al and Port Authority customs agents at JFK.
