Sometimes people ask me why I founded Goose Chronicles.
It all started one afternoon while I was volunteering in the Alzheimer’s ward of an assisted living facility in Queens, New York.
I was speaking with a woman named Rita. Her husband, Robert, was suffering from late stage Alzheimer’s and hadn’t spoken in years. While Rita and I spoke Robert stared blankly into his lap alternating between sleep and consciousness.
Rita told me about the difficulty of loving someone with such a debilitating disease.
“It’s hard seeing someone you loved live this way.” She said. “Everyone that sees him only sees the man slumped over in a wheelchair, who is unable to feed himself or communicate in any way.” She grabbed Robert’s hand. “They don’t know the man he used to be, the man I fell in love with.”
“What would you want others to know about him?”
Rita hesitated and thought about it. “I wish others knew that he was the kindest man I ever met.”
‘Well…” Rita went on to tell me a simple story that captured the essence of Robert’s kindness.
“You know Rita.” I said. “Other people should know this story so they appreciate him for the man he was. I’d like to write his story and share it with others.”
“I’d like that.”
And on that note Goose Chronicles was born. :)
Below is the first Goose Chronicles story I ever wrote. I hope you enjoy.
