I've had a lifelong love affair with New York City. If there is reincarnation, I believe I’ve lived here before. I’ve been coming in and out of New York my whole life.
After I got divorced it took me five years to decide what to do. I came here permanently in 2002 because I’m a single woman and I feel safe here.
When I moved here I was immediately introduced to Dutch, who was the informal ‘social director’ of our building. He would sit on the stoop and chat with everyone as they went in and out of the building.
Dutch recently passed away at the age of 91. He was a musician and played the sax and clarinet until six months before his death. He was full of so much life.
One of the nicest things about Dutch was that he always wore his wedding band even though his wife had passed away 30 years earlier. He said wearing the ring kept her in the present and that’s where he wanted her to be.
Ever since Dutch died, the people in my building try to stay in touch but it’s not the same without him. He enriched all of our lives exponentially by helping us stay connected. We all miss him but we know he’s finally back together with his wife and that makes us happy.
