'Universal Talk Laws’ (Part 2 of 2)
In February of 2009 my girlfriend and I went to a recognition trip in Puerto Rico. After we returned we were entertaining another couple at her house and showing them pictures of the trip. That's when I weighed 305 pounds with 35% body fat. Nobody ridiculed my body in the beach photos, but I was personally embarrassed. They weren't judging me – I was judging me...
That one event led me to reach out to a nutritionist and bodybuilder named Carl Frady III. He helped me change my life in a major way. I worked out and ate measured portions of tilapia, broccoli and quinoa every day. I lost 75 pounds and 22% of my body fat after a year of Carl's guidance.
But I was still drinking the same amount. Imagine a person who starts eating a quarter of what they used to but drinks the same amount of alcohol. It wasn't a good result – from February to October my 'drunk sessions' turned up a lot. On a few occasions I woke up and didn't know where I was. I knew I'd end up killing myself if I didn't stop drinking, so on October 31st 2009 I had my last drink.
When I stopped drinking everything about my performance improved. I became obsessed with my work and mastering every single client interaction to close the sale. I walked into mastery. That's what most people don’t understand – a master does not know all, a master is the best student. A master never stops growing at the level of a developing baby and because of that constant growth he or she can reach levels unattainable by the average man.
The change in my mentality allowed me to perform so well that I eventually became a legend in the company. I did something that was the equivalence of winning a Golden Globe and Oscar in the world of sales. In 2013, due to my 2012 performance, I won the Gold Stevie award and the ARDA (American Resort Development Association) award in the same year. In the history of sales no one had won both in same year. I remember thinking to myself, 'This is the pinnacle! You've won two global awards!...but is this it?' I didn't feel it. Instead of helping a company I wanted to help the world with the skills I had learned.
Five or six days after winning the ARDA award, I started writing the 'Universal Talk Laws.' The 'Universal Talk Laws' talks about my mental transition from an employee-minded person into an entrepreneurial thinker, and how important words and their meanings are to a person's overall development. Everyone whose attained wealth – regardless of how – had to speak to someone. The most influential person has a way with words that causes everyone to be drawn to him or her no matter the situation. Everyone knows someone who can sell anything to anyone at any time with seemingly no effort – I tried to capture these skills and share them with others so they could improve their lives.
After I finished the book there was a series of events that helped me move into my next phase. I started getting offers to speak at different organizations sharing my story and communication system from the book. My love for igniting others started to grow bigger than my love for sales. At one of the recognition dinners one of the heads of the company said: “Sometimes you have to take a small step backwards in order to take giant leap forward."
My book, 'Universal Talk Laws' was about to be released and I knew I couldn't properly dedicate myself to both my career and my book. I resigned from my job on October 13th 2013. The day before I retired I got another huge sale but I didn't even care, the job was no longer a challenge.
Since I left my job a whole new world has opened up. I've become a different version of myself. I've become an author, a consultant, a motivational speaker and most recently an actor in my own play! That's what I love about commitments – once you decide to eliminate your worst habits with the intention to grow, you can change your whole life and everything becomes so much easier.
I practice the law of detachment. The whole premise of detachment is this: whether you do good or bad, create a life where you are not attached to what took place a minute before. I've completely eliminated my attachment to status, ego and money. All the satisfaction I used to get from the outside comes from the inside. I'm completely free now.
